The Territory

Picture
The territory is part of the Municipality of San Dorligo della Valle-Dolina, adjoining the Slovenian border a few kilometers from Trieste, in the most northern part of the Mediterranean basin.

The Carso Highlands are cut by the Rosandra Valley (Dolina Glinščice) through which the Rosandra (Glinščica) river runs. It's the only one in the entire Trieste Carso that flows above ground. The inside of the valley, now a Nature Reserve, is made up of limestone eroded by water and has about 70 caves.

The Estate

Picture
The winery is located in Bagnoli della Rosandra, at the edges of the Rosandra Valley, just some kilometers outside Trieste. We’ve built our own winery from the ground up, matching style and technology, trying to suit both winemaking requirements and aesthetic needs. We conduct guided tastings and various eno-gastronomical and cultural events.

We use temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for the maturation of young wines, such as our Vitovska; or oak barrels in our barrique cellar, to age our Refosco and our white blend 'Matos Nonet'.

The Soil and Climate

Picture
The Carso area’s landscape is quite varied, with different kind of vegetation in different places. Some areas are flat or slightly sloping, while the hilly areas and the steep slopes going down to the sea are often terraced. Vines have been planted here for centuries, giving the landscape a particular character.

The soil is arid and hard to till; every cultivated patch of ground has been taken by force from the strong but generous nature.

Past generations have cultivated the earth with great ability and have made it fertile. The result is a pleasant environment which is still maintained by those who continue to live here devoting themselves to traditional agriculture.

The area around San Dorligo, where our vineyards are located, is made up of flysch, sandstone and clay. The climate is Mediterranean with continental influences and an average of 300 sunny days per year.

There is sometimes a very strong north-easterly wind, called the Bora, which blows from the hinterland and provides a dry climate making the use of insecticides almost unnecessary. This particular wind gives our native Bianchera-Belica olive groves peculiar characteristics. Our extra virgin olive oil is so unique that some call it “Nordic Oil”.
